What is IMS?

IMS is an analytical technique that separates ions on the basis of their size, shape, charge and mass. It can be employed as a standalone technique, or it can be coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) supplying an extra dimension of resolution that provides information about the three dimensional structure of an ion, and increases peak capacity and confidence in compound characterization. IMS-MS also offers significant utility in the analysis of isomeric species, where different structures are reflected by differences in collision cross sections (CCS).
